The XAU to CAD rate tracks the price of one troy ounce of gold in Canadian Dollars. Canada is a major gold-producing nation with some of the world's largest gold mines in Ontario and Quebec. The Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) lists more gold and silver mining companies than any other exchange globally, making Canada the world's leading mining finance centre.
Bank of Canada policy: BoC rate decisions affect CAD strength. Since Canada's economy is closely tied to the US, USD/CAD movements tend to be more muted than other pairs, but BoC/Fed policy divergence can create significant XAU/CAD swings.
Oil price correlation: The Canadian Dollar is heavily influenced by crude oil prices (Canada is a major oil exporter). When oil and gold move in opposite directions — which happens during risk-off events — XAU/CAD can move sharply as both the numerator and denominator shift simultaneously.
